Metformin – Type 2 Diabetes and Anti-Aging
Metformin is a medication commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, but recent research has also suggested that it may have anti-aging properties.
One of the ways in which metformin may promote longevity is by activating an enzyme called AMPK, which is involved in regulating energy metabolism in cells. Activation of AMPK has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels, and promote the growth of new mitochondria, the “power plants” of cells.
Another proposed mechanism by which metformin may exert anti-aging effects is through its ability to inhibit the activity of the enzyme mTOR, which is involved in the regulation of cell growth and proliferation. Inhibition of mTOR has been shown to promote lifespan in animals and reduce the risk of age-related diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Metformin for Cardiovascular and Anti-Cancer Health
Metformin has also been shown to improve cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. This is likely due to its ability to lower blood sugar levels, decrease inflammation, and improve the function of the endothelial cells that line blood vessels.
There is also some evidence to suggest that metformin may have anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown that metformin can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, and may even make them more sensitive to chemotherapy.
While research into the anti-aging properties of metformin is still in its early stages, the results so far are promising. However, more research is needed to fully understand how metformin works and to determine the optimal dosages and duration of treatment.
